At Carlsbad Beach Recovery, we understand that life doesn’t slow down just because you’ve decided it’s time to heal. Between work deadlines, school schedules, family responsibilities, and the reality of Southern California traffic, finding time for treatment can feel like another obstacle. That’s why our Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is built for real-life recovery!
You don’t have to sit in traffic, rearrange your entire schedule, or step away from your responsibilities to begin recovering from mental health challenges or drug and alcohol addiction. Our Virtual IOP gives you access to the same licensed clinicians, structured therapeutic support, and holistic approaches as our in-person programs — just delivered in a way that fits your day, not disrupts it.
Whether you’re a busy professional, a student balancing classes, active duty military, or simply someone who wants a smarter, forward-thinking way to approach recovery, our telehealth therapy meets you where you are. It’s flexible. It’s modern. And it’s designed to support long-term healing while you continue building your future — not putting it on pause.
What Virtual IOP?
A Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (Virtual IOP) is a structured form of addiction and mental health treatment that is delivered online through live video sessions. It provides a higher level of care than traditional weekly therapy while allowing participants to continue living at home and maintain many of their normal daily responsibilities, such as work, school, or family obligations. Virtual IOPs typically include several hours of treatment each week, often combining group therapy, individual counseling, skills-building sessions, family therapy, and psychiatric services when needed. These programs are commonly used to treat substance use disorders, depression, anxiety, trauma-related conditions, and co-occurring mental health and addiction issues. Virtual IOP can be a good option for individuals who need intensive support but do not require 24-hour supervision or inpatient care. By using secure telehealth technology, Virtual IOPs increase access to treatment while offering flexibility, convenience, and continuity of care from home.

- Need more support than weekly outpatient therapy can provide.
- Are experiencing mild to moderate mental health or substance use symptoms that do not require inpatient treatment.
- Are transitioning from a higher level of care, such as residential treatment, inpatient hospitalization, or a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP).
- Have a stable and safe home environment where they can participate in treatment.
- Want to continue working, attending school, or managing family responsibilities while receiving intensive care.
- Have transportation, mobility, childcare, or geographic barriers that make in-person treatment difficult.
- Need structured therapy, skill-building, and peer support several times per week.
- Are seeking treatment for depression, anxiety, trauma, substance use disorders, or co-occurring mental health and addiction concerns.
- Have access to a reliable internet connection and a private space for sessions.
- Are motivated to actively engage in treatment and practice recovery skills outside of sessions.
What to Expect During in Virtual IOP
During a Virtual IOP, participants receive structured mental health and/or substance use treatment through live online sessions while continuing to live at home and maintain many of their daily responsibilities. The program is designed to help individuals reduce symptoms, develop healthy coping skills, improve emotional regulation, strengthen relationships, support recovery from substance use, and build a foundation for long-term wellness.
Following an initial assessment, a personalized treatment plan is developed based on each individual’s unique needs and goals. Participants typically attend treatment three to five days per week for approximately three hours per day, totaling about 9–15 hours of programming each week. Most Virtual IOPs last between 6 and 12 weeks, although the length of treatment may vary depending on clinical needs and progress.
Services commonly include therapist-led group therapy, individual counseling, psychoeducation, skills training using evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), family therapy when appropriate, and psychiatric services or medication management as needed. Treatment focuses on helping participants build practical skills that can be applied in everyday life to improve overall functioning and support long-term recovery.
Programs are facilitated by licensed behavioral health professionals, including Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists (LMFTs), Licensed Professional Clinical Counselors (LPCCs/LPCs), psychologists, certified substance use counselors, psychiatrists, and psychiatric nurse practitioners. Participants join sessions through a secure telehealth platform using a computer, tablet, or smartphone and are encouraged to actively engage in treatment, practice skills between sessions, and apply what they learn outside of treatment to support lasting recovery and improved mental health outcomes.
Additional Treatment Programs Carlsbad Beach Recovery Offers
While Virtual IOP is an incredible starting point for outpatient recovery, we know healing isn’t one-size-fits-all. That’s why Carlsbad Beach Recovery offers a full continuum of care, providing deeper structure and support as needed.
PHP – Partial Hospitalization Program – For individuals who need more frequent contact and higher accountability than IOP, our PHP offers structured daily therapy and wellness care. It’s ideal for those transitioning from detox or inpatient care, or needing more time in therapy each week.
Aftercare Services – Stay connected even after completing your IOP or PHP. Our Aftercare Program includes weekly alumni check-ins, sober outings, job and resume support, and emotional coaching—all designed to help you stay grounded long after treatment ends.
How Much Does Virtual IOP Cost in San Diego?
For individuals paying out of pocket, Virtual IOP programs typically range from approximately $1,000 to $5,000 per month, with many programs falling between $2,500 and $4,500 per month for a standard 9–15-hour-per-week schedule.
Some lower-cost national virtual programs advertise rates around $1,300–$1,500 per month, while highly specialized programs that include intensive psychiatric services, multiple individual therapy sessions per week, or dual-diagnosis treatment may cost considerably more.
Does Insurance Cover Virtual IOP for Addiction & Mental Health in San Diego?
Yes, Most major health insurance plans cover Virtual IOPs for both mental health and substance use disorder treatment when services are considered medically necessary. Coverage levels vary by plan and may include deductibles, copays, coinsurance, prior authorization requirements, and provider network restrictions.
Common insurance providers that often cover Virtual IOP services in San Diego include Blue Shield of California, Anthem Blue Cross, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Health Net, Molina Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, and many employer-sponsored PPO and HMO plans.

What Won’t Telehealth IOP Treat?
While Virtual IOP can effectively treat many mental health and substance use conditions, it is not appropriate for individuals who require a higher level of care or immediate medical intervention. Telehealth IOP typically does not provide medical detoxification, 24-hour supervision, crisis stabilization, or inpatient psychiatric services. Individuals experiencing severe substance withdrawal, active suicidal thoughts with intent or plan, significant risk of harm to themselves or others, acute psychosis, severe eating disorder complications, or other medical or psychiatric emergencies generally require inpatient hospitalization, residential treatment, or a higher level of care before participating in a Virtual IOP.
Virtual IOP may not be suitable for individuals who lack a safe and stable living environment, do not have reliable internet access or a private space for treatment, or are unable to consistently engage in online therapy sessions. A comprehensive clinical assessment is typically completed before admission to determine whether Virtual IOP is the safest and most effective treatment option.

Finding specialized care for gambling and social media addiction is incredibly difficult, but this program addresses the complexities and behaviors of these addictions. They don't just focus on "stopping" the addiction; they teach you how to build a healthy relationship with technology and how to navigate addiction triggers in your life. If you or a loved one are struggling with digital dependence or gambling, or other forms of addiction, including substance use, check out Beach Recovery.Posted on Google LisaMay 18, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I came to the center for a severe gambling addiction because everything I had tried in the past never worked. I tried 12 step groups, support groups, therapy, managing it on my own and quitting cold turkey . After coming to Carlsbad Beach Recovery, I was introduced to new tools and very experienced therapists in the field of gambling and was able to identify why I did what I did, learn about the brain, childhood trauma, and process all of the underlying reasons why I was acting compulsively and addictively. Without that awareness, I might have never made it. I was literally at the end of my rope, and they saved my life. I highly recommend this program for anybody struggling with a gambling addiction because it’s a very unique addiction and requires very specialized treatment. I had quit gambling in the past, but the obsession and the desire never went away. I am now 65 days off gambling and I have zero desire to ever go back to that horrible dark lifestyle. I’m finally in a place where my desire to heal and feel better outweighs my desire to act out compulsively. Thank you so much to everybody who works here.Posted on Google CarsonApril 10, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I recently visited this facility as a licensed clinical social worker with an addiction certification for networking as well as to scout out IOPs (intensive outpatient program) for any client of mine that needs a higher level of care than what I can provide at the outpatient level. They offer both PHP (6 hrs/day) and IOP (3 hrs/day) programs filled with psycho-educational groups with comprehensive trauma-informed psychotherapy, adventure and holistic activities, & case management services etc. I was more than impressed with the friendliness & energy of the staff, the aesthetic aspects of the facility, and would not hesitate to send any client or friend to Carlsbad Beach Recovery.Posted on Google JennyFebruary 12, 2026Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My partner and I just finished our stay at Carlsbad Beach Recovery, and I’ve never experienced a place run with this much heart. Melody, Nima, Bobby, Cayden, Celine, and the whole team there are WORLD-CLASS human beings. They didn’t just “do their job” — they made us feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for in a way I’ve never experienced in treatment. I was able to finally muster enough courage to publish my book and it happened here at CBR. I cannot scream praises high enough for this team. This is a new rehab outside the fast paced life of the city, but it’s not your standard OC/SD shuffle either — it already feels different. You can tell they’re building something sacred. Melody has the kind of leadership that makes people believe in themselves again, and the staff follows her with the same intentionality and compassion. They treat you like family from the moment you walk in the door. They also work with couples in a way that’s safe, structured, and honestly life-changing. Even when separated, you’re literally only a few steps away from your person, and that closeness meant the world to us. Just the group instructors there will challenge you to your core, and help you so much because they’re so well rounded, you just trust them. Every single human at this organization loves what they do and it shows in everything they do. I miss it already 🥹 Carlsbad Beach Recovery gave us hope, community, and a sense of belonging we desperately needed. I truly expect big things from this place as they grow, and I’m grateful to have been part of the beginning. If you’re looking for a place that’s pure, supportive, and built on real love and intention — this is it. — ML You guys rock. Never stop working for the addict that still suffers. Please. We needed you guys so bad. Thank you. P.S. just in one week they took me on the best outing I’ve ever been to at Dave and Busters, and then took it a step further and visited the most beautiful garden in California in Encinitas. Don’t walk. Run. You’re safe here. I wrote and published both of these books while in treatment here. You can do it too!
