Finding the Right Program Intensity at Carlsbad Beach Recovery

You need a program that matches where you are right now – not where you think you should be, not where you want to be. There is no shame in where you are right in this moment. At Carlsbad Beach Recovery, located at 3081 Madison Street in Carlsbad, CA, we’ve built our reputation on meeting people exactly as they are.

Our team holds accreditations from The Joint Commission and the National Association of Addiction Treatment Providers (NAATP), which means we’ve met rigorous standards for safety, ethics, and evidence-based treatment. We’re also licensed by the California Department of Health Care Services (CDHCS) and certified by LegitScript and TNP.health. These credentials matter because they ensure you receive thoroughly vetted, continuously evaluated care.

We treat a wide range of conditions: Substance Use Disorder (SUD), mental health disorders, behavioral addictions, and dual diagnosis situations where multiple issues intersect. Each requires its own approach, so we build your treatment plan around your specific challenges, combining evidence-based therapies with holistic care for your body, mind, and spirit.

At Carlsbad Beach Recovery, healing happens on many levels, from physical wellness and emotional processing to practical life skills and reconnection to what (and who) matters most. Our San Diego County location, moments from the Pacific Ocean, offers a healing environment where nature itself becomes part of your restoration. To learn more about the Carlsbad Beach Recovery team and approach to treatment, call us today at (442) 500-1336.

Balancing Structure and Flexibility in Southern California

The real difference between partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient programs comes down to logistics. With one, recovery is your full-time commitment. The other lets you weave treatment around your existing life. Both work; it just depends on what your situation allows right now and what you need to stay safe and moving forward.

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is ideal if you need that full-day commitment. You’ll attend Monday through Friday with 6 hours of programming daily. This isn’t just group therapy; it’s a complete therapeutic experience. You’ll work with psychiatrists, therapists, counselors, and peer specialists. You’ll tackle underlying issues while building new coping skills and reconnecting with yourself.

If you’ve traveled to Carlsbad for treatment or simply need extra stability outside of session hours, we also offer optional sober housing for those enrolled in our PHP. That way, your entire day supports your healing – not just the hours you’re in our facility.

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) structure works when you’re ready to step down from the PHP level, or when you don’t need full-day care to begin with. You’ll attend 3 hours of programming, and we tailor the number of days each week to your needs and your life.

Many people use IOP as a bridge. They step down from PHP once they’ve stabilized, or they start with IOP if their situation isn’t as acute. You keep working, parenting, studying, living. Treatment becomes part of your week, not your entire week. This flexibility matters because real life doesn’t pause for healing.

If you can’t come to our Carlsbad location, our virtual IOP brings the same rigorous treatment to you. You’ll attend sessions from home, on a schedule that fits your life. The programming is identical to our in-person IOP: the same therapists, the same evidence-based approaches, and the same commitment to your healing.

Virtual doesn’t mean less. It means accessible. Whether you’re on the coast, inland, in the mountains, or anywhere across California, you can get the care you need without relocating or commuting.

Specialized Support for Dual Diagnoses

Many rehab programs focus only on substance use. That’s their lane, and they do it well. At Carlsbad Beach Recovery, we treat the whole picture: substance use disorder, mental health disorders, behavioral addictions like gambling, and the complicated intersections where multiple issues overlap.

When you’re struggling with more than one thing at once, you need more than a cookie-cutter program. You need experienced and compassionate practitioners who understand how depression feeds addiction, how a gambling compulsion mirrors the drug addiction cycle, or how anxiety disorders can make everything worse.

We can adapt both our intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs to your specific diagnoses. If you’re battling substance use and clinical depression, your treatment plan reflects that. If a gambling addiction is tangled up with your alcohol addiction, we address both. We don’t treat these as separate problems that happen to live in the same person; with our integrated dual diagnosis approach, we treat them as interconnected pieces of a larger pattern.

A Holistic Approach to Complex Diagnoses

Healing doesn’t have to happen in a generic talk therapy room. At Carlsbad Beach Recovery, we use our location to deepen your recovery. Beach yoga helps you reconnect with your body after addiction’s damage. Time near the ocean calms your nervous system and reminds you that stability is possible.

We pair nutritional counseling, fitness programming, and mindfulness practices with traditional therapy. These holistic interventions are central to our approach because your mind, body, and spirit all need and deserve attention. When you’re healing from dual diagnoses, that integration matters more than ever.

Navigating Insurance and Admissions in Carlsbad

Money concerns shouldn’t stop you from getting help. We work with most insurance plans and will walk you through every step, from checking your coverage to admission. If cost is a barrier, let’s talk. We’re here to remove obstacles, not create them.

Call for insurance verification at (442) 500-1336. We accept many major insurance plans, but coverage details vary by policy, employer, and state. Call us to confirm what your plan covers and what your out-of-pocket costs might be.

Our admissions team will verify your insurance and can explain your options clearly. If your primary insurance doesn’t work, we’ll explore alternatives, flexibility, and resources. Don’t assume you can’t afford treatment—get the real numbers before discounting it entirely.

You don’t have to wait weeks to start. Many times, we can assess and admit you the same day. Carlsbad Beach Recovery evaluates your needs, matches you with the right PHP or IOP level of care, and gets you started right away. Here is what to expect:

  1. When you first contact us, our admissions team will walk you through everything. We’ll schedule an assessment to get to know you.
  2. During this assessment, one of our clinicians talks with you about your substance use, mental health, any behavioral concerns, and your overall goals.
  3. From there, we match you with the right program level, create a personalized treatment plan, and set up your schedule.
  4. We’ll take the time to verify your insurance coverage, explain your financial responsibility, and help you understand all the paperwork – no jargon, no surprises.
  5. If you’re entering our PHP and interested in sober housing, we’ll discuss those options and what’s available.
  6. We’ll tell you what to bring (ID, insurance card, current medications, a list of any medical conditions), so you’re prepared for your first day.
  7. You’ll attend a program orientation where you meet your care team and other participants.
  8. From there, you’ll actively participate in your treatment, regularly collaborating with your care team to adjust your tailored treatment plan as you go.

Our goal is to answer your questions and work out as many kinks as possible before you begin treatment. We want you to enter treatment fully informed so you can focus on rehabilitation without worrying about logistics.

Key Differences Between IOP and PHP Levels of Care

When you’re comparing PHPs and IOPs, you need concrete information, not just philosophy. Both programs work; they’re just built for different moments in your process and different life circumstances. Understanding the specifics helps you choose what fits your unique situation. The differences matter, but one isn’t “better.” They depend on intensity, timing, and what your life can handle right now. Maybe you’re in early recovery and need that 5-day-per-week rhythm. Maybe you’re further along and ready to test your skills in the real world while still getting professional guidance. Maybe you can’t relocate, so virtual IOP is your answer. All of these are valid paths.
Aspect PHP IOP Virtual IOP
Hours of Clinical Engagement 6 hours daily, Monday-Friday (30 hours/week) 3 hours per session; 1-5 days/week based on your needs 3 hours per session; 1-5 days/week based on your needs
Level of Medical & Therapeutic Supervision Daily psychiatrist availability, nursing staff on-site, intensive therapeutic oversight Regular psychiatrist check-ins, therapist-led sessions, less frequent medical monitoring Regular psychiatrist check-ins via telehealth, therapist-led sessions, monitoring adapted for remote care
Living Arrangements Live independently or in our optional sober living facility; housing available for those who’ve traveled or need extra stability You maintain your own housing and daily life You maintain your own housing and daily life anywhere in California
Treatment Timing Ideal for early recovery, acute mental health crises, or when you need stabilization Right for stepping down from PHP, mid-recovery, or when you’re stable enough to work/study Right for those who can’t relocate, prefer home-based care, or live far from Carlsbad
Therapeutic Modalities Individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, specialized tracks (gambling addiction, dual diagnosis), holistic activities Individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, specialized tracks, some holistic interventions Individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatry, specialized tracks adapted for virtual delivery
Flexibility Structured 5-day schedule Customized session frequency and timing Customized session frequency and timing from home
Your recovery stage determines which program makes sense. If you’re newly sober or newly stabilized, the PHP’s rhythm and intensity can anchor you. If you’re further along (maybe you’ve completed PHP and are stepping down, or you were stable to begin with), our IOP lets you prove to yourself you can manage treatment alongside your regular responsibilities. The virtual IOP removes geographic barriers entirely. As a person in recovery, you deserve a program that meets you where you are, not where someone thinks you should be. That’s why we offer all three. Call us today at (442) 500-1336.

Frequently Asked Questions

PHP is full-time (30 hours weekly, Monday-Friday) with daily medical oversight, which is ideal for early recovery or stabilization. IOP is 3 hours per session, 1-5 days a week, so you can work or study while receiving intensive treatment. Both are rigorous; the PHP format is just more intensive and closely supervised.

Yes. Our virtual intensive outpatient program matches the rigor of in-person sessions and is available to anyone in California. You’ll get the same therapists, psychiatrists, and specialized tracks, just from home. It’s ideal if you can’t relocate or prefer remote care.

Most plans cover both, but it varies by policy and employer. Understanding your plan’s nuances is key to knowing how much you’ll pay. Call us at (442) 500-1336 for insurance verification. We’ll confirm your exact coverage and any out-of-pocket costs before you start treatment.

Beach yoga isn’t separate from treatment; it’s part of it. Mindfulness, movement, and the ocean environment all work in tandem to support nervous system regulation and emotional processing. Our beach yoga complements psychotherapy and helps you build sustainable wellness habits.

No. Sober housing is optional and available as an add-on for patients enrolled in our PHP who could benefit. For example, you may have traveled or want extra stability during early recovery. Other people choose to maintain their own housing.

If you’re struggling with daily functioning, having withdrawal symptoms, require stabilization, or feeling unsafe, you likely need PHP or IOP instead of weekly therapy. Call us to talk through your situation; we can assess your needs and determine what fits your healing right now.

I just had an introduction to Beach Recovery's PHP and IOP programs. Finding specialized care for gambling and social media addiction is incredibly difficult, but this program addresses the complexities and behaviors of these addictions. They don't just focus on "stopping" the addiction; they teach you how to build a healthy relationship with technology and how to navigate addiction triggers in your life. If you or a loved one are struggling with digital dependence or gambling, or other forms of addiction, including substance use, check out Beach Recovery.

I came to the center for a severe gambling addiction because everything I had tried in the past never worked. I tried 12 step groups, support groups, therapy, managing it on my own and quitting cold turkey . After coming to Carlsbad Beach Recovery, I was introduced to new tools and very experienced therapists in the field of gambling and was able to identify why I did what I did, learn about the brain, childhood trauma, and process all of the underlying reasons why I was acting compulsively and addictively. Without that awareness, I might have never made it. I was literally at the end of my rope, and they saved my life. I highly recommend this program for anybody struggling with a gambling addiction because it’s a very unique addiction and requires very specialized treatment. I had quit gambling in the past, but the obsession and the desire never went away. I am now 65 days off gambling and I have zero desire to ever go back to that horrible dark lifestyle. I’m finally in a place where my desire to heal and feel better outweighs my desire to act out compulsively. Thank you so much to everybody who works here.

I recently visited this facility as a licensed clinical social worker with an addiction certification for networking as well as to scout out IOPs (intensive outpatient program) for any client of mine that needs a higher level of care than what I can provide at the outpatient level. They offer both PHP (6 hrs/day) and IOP (3 hrs/day) programs filled with psycho-educational groups with comprehensive trauma-informed psychotherapy, adventure and holistic activities, & case management services etc. I was more than impressed with the friendliness & energy of the staff, the aesthetic aspects of the facility, and would not hesitate to send any client or friend to Carlsbad Beach Recovery.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ FINALLY 🗣️ A Rehab That Actually Cares — Carlsbad Beach Recovery Is The Real Deal! My partner and I just finished our stay at Carlsbad Beach Recovery, and I’ve never experienced a place run with this much heart. Melody, Nima, Bobby, Cayden, Celine, and the whole team there are WORLD-CLASS human beings. They didn’t just “do their job” — they made us feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for in a way I’ve never experienced in treatment. I was able to finally muster enough courage to publish my book and it happened here at CBR. I cannot scream praises high enough for this team. This is a new rehab outside the fast paced life of the city, but it’s not your standard OC/SD shuffle either — it already feels different. You can tell they’re building something sacred. Melody has the kind of leadership that makes people believe in themselves again, and the staff follows her with the same intentionality and compassion. They treat you like family from the moment you walk in the door. They also work with couples in a way that’s safe, structured, and honestly life-changing. Even when separated, you’re literally only a few steps away from your person, and that closeness meant the world to us. Just the group instructors there will challenge you to your core, and help you so much because they’re so well rounded, you just trust them. Every single human at this organization loves what they do and it shows in everything they do. I miss it already 🥹 Carlsbad Beach Recovery gave us hope, community, and a sense of belonging we desperately needed. I truly expect big things from this place as they grow, and I’m grateful to have been part of the beginning. If you’re looking for a place that’s pure, supportive, and built on real love and intention — this is it. — ML You guys rock. Never stop working for the addict that still suffers. Please. We needed you guys so bad. Thank you. P.S. just in one week they took me on the best outing I’ve ever been to at Dave and Busters, and then took it a step further and visited the most beautiful garden in California in Encinitas. Don’t walk. Run. You’re safe here. I wrote and published both of these books while in treatment here. You can do it too!
  • SAMHSA research indicates that Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOPs) are as effective as inpatient treatment for most individuals seeking help for substance use disorders. However, this assumes a lower risk of withdrawal and a safe home environment. SAMHSA also reports that IOP is most effective when it is part of a continuum of care.
  • Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHPs) may help reduce the need for inpatient psychiatric care. A Journal of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry study of high-acuity patients found that 91% had fewer hospital readmissions after completing a PHP.
  • Research published in The Psychiatric Quarterly suggests that approximately 15-16 treatment days, or about 4 weeks of regular attendance, may offer substantial protection against hospitalization.
  • One Health Technology Assessment review examined 9 trials comparing acute day hospitals with inpatient admission and outpatient care. They concluded that diverting patients to an acute day hospital could reduce psychiatric inpatient admissions by at least 23%. They also found some evidence that day treatment may improve symptoms more than outpatient care for nonpsychotic patients who have not responded to outpatient treatment.
  • A study in Cognitive and Behavioral Process found that concurrent cognitive behavioral therapy for substance use disorders and co-occurring mood or anxiety disorders in an intensive outpatient program was associated with reduced substance use and mental health symptoms from baseline to posttreatment, alongside high retention (91%). The findings suggest this approach may benefit from in-person, hybrid, and telehealth formats.
