What is Evidence-Based Treatment?

Evidence-based treatment refers to healthcare approaches that are supported by scientific research and clinical evidence and have been shown to help people with specific mental health or substance use conditions. These treatments use established therapeutic methods, medications, and clinical practices rather than approaches based primarily on anecdotal results or unproven claims.

Evidence-based treatment can be used to treat a wide range of mental health and substance use disorders. The specific approach depends on the individual’s diagnosis, symptoms, medical history, and treatment needs. Common conditions treated with evidence-based approaches include major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Evidence-based treatments are also widely used for alcohol use disorder, opioid use disorder, cocaine use disorder, stimulant use disorder, and other substance use disorders. Individuals experiencing co-occurring disorders, sometimes called dual diagnosis, may benefit from an integrated treatment plan that addresses both the mental health condition and substance use disorder at the same time.

Example of Evidence-Based Treatments

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps individuals identify unhealthy thoughts and behaviors and develop healthier coping strategies.
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT): Teaches skills for managing intense emotions, reducing impulsive behaviors, and improving relationships.
  • Motivational Interviewing (MI): Helps individuals explore their reasons for change and build motivation to address substance use or mental health concerns.
  • Medication Management: Uses medications when appropriate to help manage mental health symptoms or support recovery from substance use disorders.
  • Medication for Substance Use Disorders: Medications such as buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone may be used to treat certain substance use disorders and reduce cravings or withdrawal symptoms.
  • Trauma-Focused Therapy: Addresses the effects of traumatic experiences and helps individuals develop healthier ways to process trauma and manage related symptoms.
  • Relapse Prevention: Helps individuals recognize triggers, develop coping strategies, and create plans for maintaining recovery and responding to potential setbacks.
  • Group Therapy: Provides a structured setting where individuals can develop coping skills, practice healthy communication, and receive support from others with similar challenges.
  • Family Therapy: Involves family members in treatment to improve communication, strengthen relationships, and develop a supportive recovery environment.

What Are Not Evidence-Based Treatments?

Treatments that are not evidence-based are approaches that have not been sufficiently supported by reliable scientific research for treating a specific mental health or substance use disorder. Examples may include homeopathy, which uses highly diluted substances without strong evidence that it treats addiction or mental health disorders; iridology, which claims that examining the iris can identify health conditions; and unproven detox or cleansing programs, which may promote special drinks, supplements, or restrictive diets as a way to remove addictive substances or treat psychiatric conditions. Certain alternative practices, such as acupuncture, meditation, or yoga, may be used as complementary services for wellness or symptom management, but they should not be presented as replacements for established treatments when treating a substance use or mental health disorder.

Signs You May Need Evidence-Based Addiction & Mental Health Treatment

  • Substance Use Is Difficult to Control: Repeated attempts to cut back or stop using drugs or alcohol have been unsuccessful.
  • Mental Health Symptoms Persist: Depression, anxiety, mood changes, trauma symptoms, or other psychological concerns continue to interfere with daily life.
  • Substance Use Affects Daily Responsibilities: Drug or alcohol use begins interfering with work, school, finances, relationships, or other important responsibilities.
  • Increased Tolerance or Withdrawal: A person needs more of a substance to experience the same effects or experiences physical or psychological symptoms when stopping or reducing use.
  • Using Substances to Cope: Drugs or alcohol are regularly used to manage stress, anxiety, depression, trauma, or other uncomfortable emotions.
  • Relationships Are Being Affected: Substance use or mental health symptoms contribute to frequent conflict, isolation, or difficulty maintaining healthy relationships.
  • Loss of Interest in Activities: Hobbies, social activities, and other previously enjoyable experiences no longer feel appealing.
  • Repeated Relapse: Attempts at recovery are followed by recurring substance use despite wanting to remain sober.
  • Symptoms Are Getting Worse: Mental health or substance use symptoms are becoming more frequent, severe, or difficult to manage without professional support.
  • Daily Life Feels Increasingly Difficult: Persistent emotional distress, cravings, impulsive behavior, or substance use makes it challenging to maintain a stable and healthy routine.

How Long Do Evidence-Based Treatments Last?

The length of evidence-based treatment varies depending on the therapy, diagnosis, severity of symptoms, and individual treatment goals. A typical individual therapy session lasts about 45 to 60 minutes, although some programs use shorter or longer sessions. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) commonly involves weekly sessions over several weeks or months. For substance use disorders, CBT may continue for approximately 5 to 10 months, depending on the individual’s needs.

For individuals receiving a higher level of addiction or mental health care, treatment can involve multiple sessions and therapeutic activities each day. Intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization programs may provide several hours of treatment per day, multiple days per week, while residential treatment involves living at a treatment facility and participating in structured care throughout the day. The overall length of care can range from several weeks to several months or longer. Residential treatment commonly lasts from a few weeks to a few months, while outpatient frequency depends on the person’s needs.

Who is Qualified to Give Evidence-Based Treatments?

Evidence-based treatments should be provided by qualified healthcare professionals who have the appropriate education, training, licensure, and experience for the services they provide. The specific credentials depend on the type of treatment. In California, common professionals involved in evidence-based mental health and addiction treatment include licensed psychologists (PhD or PsyD), psychiatrists (MD or DO), licensed clinical social workers (LCSW), licensed marriage and family therapists (LMFT), and licensed professional clinical counselors (LPCC). California also permits appropriately registered associates and supervised trainees to provide certain services while completing the requirements for full licensure.

How Much Do Evidence-Based Treatments Cost Without Insurance?

The cost of evidence-based addiction and mental health treatment without insurance in San Diego varies based on the provider, treatment approach, frequency of services, and level of care. As a general estimate, individual outpatient therapy may cost about $125 to $350 per session, with specialized providers sometimes charging more. Psychiatric appointments and medication management may range from approximately $150 to $500 or more per appointment, depending on the provider and complexity of care.

For more intensive addiction and mental health treatment, intensive outpatient programs (IOP) commonly cost around $3,000 to $15,000 per month, while partial hospitalization programs (PHP) may range from approximately $5,000 to $20,000 per month. Medical detox can cost roughly $1,750 to $10,000 or more per week, depending on the level of medical supervision and length of withdrawal management. Residential treatment generally ranges from about $6,000 to $35,000 or more per month, with luxury and highly specialized programs potentially costing substantially more.

Does Insurance Cover Evidence-Based Treatment in San Diego?

Yes. Many health insurance plans cover evidence-based treatment for mental health and substance use disorders in San Diego, including services such as therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, intensive outpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, and residential treatment when medically necessary. Major insurance providers commonly used for behavioral health care in the San Diego area include Aetna, Anthem Blue Cross, Blue Shield of California, Cigna, Health Net, and UnitedHealthcare/Optum

Coverage depends on the individual’s specific insurance plan, diagnosis, medical necessity, treatment provider, level of care, and whether the provider is in network. Some services may require prior authorization, and the plan may have deductibles, copayments, or coinsurance. California law requires many commercial health plans to cover medically necessary mental health and substance use disorder treatment, including inpatient and outpatient levels of care, under parity requirements.

I just had an introduction to Beach Recovery's PHP and IOP programs. Finding specialized care for gambling and social media addiction is incredibly difficult, but this program addresses the complexities and behaviors of these addictions. They don't just focus on "stopping" the addiction; they teach you how to build a healthy relationship with technology and how to navigate addiction triggers in your life. If you or a loved one are struggling with digital dependence or gambling, or other forms of addiction, including substance use, check out Beach Recovery.

I came to the center for a severe gambling addiction because everything I had tried in the past never worked. I tried 12 step groups, support groups, therapy, managing it on my own and quitting cold turkey . After coming to Carlsbad Beach Recovery, I was introduced to new tools and very experienced therapists in the field of gambling and was able to identify why I did what I did, learn about the brain, childhood trauma, and process all of the underlying reasons why I was acting compulsively and addictively. Without that awareness, I might have never made it. I was literally at the end of my rope, and they saved my life. I highly recommend this program for anybody struggling with a gambling addiction because it’s a very unique addiction and requires very specialized treatment. I had quit gambling in the past, but the obsession and the desire never went away. I am now 65 days off gambling and I have zero desire to ever go back to that horrible dark lifestyle. I’m finally in a place where my desire to heal and feel better outweighs my desire to act out compulsively. Thank you so much to everybody who works here.

I recently visited this facility as a licensed clinical social worker with an addiction certification for networking as well as to scout out IOPs (intensive outpatient program) for any client of mine that needs a higher level of care than what I can provide at the outpatient level. They offer both PHP (6 hrs/day) and IOP (3 hrs/day) programs filled with psycho-educational groups with comprehensive trauma-informed psychotherapy, adventure and holistic activities, & case management services etc. I was more than impressed with the friendliness & energy of the staff, the aesthetic aspects of the facility, and would not hesitate to send any client or friend to Carlsbad Beach Recovery.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ FINALLY 🗣️ A Rehab That Actually Cares — Carlsbad Beach Recovery Is The Real Deal! My partner and I just finished our stay at Carlsbad Beach Recovery, and I’ve never experienced a place run with this much heart. Melody, Nima, Bobby, Cayden, Celine, and the whole team there are WORLD-CLASS human beings. They didn’t just “do their job” — they made us feel seen, supported, and genuinely cared for in a way I’ve never experienced in treatment. I was able to finally muster enough courage to publish my book and it happened here at CBR. I cannot scream praises high enough for this team. This is a new rehab outside the fast paced life of the city, but it’s not your standard OC/SD shuffle either — it already feels different. You can tell they’re building something sacred. Melody has the kind of leadership that makes people believe in themselves again, and the staff follows her with the same intentionality and compassion. They treat you like family from the moment you walk in the door. They also work with couples in a way that’s safe, structured, and honestly life-changing. Even when separated, you’re literally only a few steps away from your person, and that closeness meant the world to us. Just the group instructors there will challenge you to your core, and help you so much because they’re so well rounded, you just trust them. Every single human at this organization loves what they do and it shows in everything they do. I miss it already 🥹 Carlsbad Beach Recovery gave us hope, community, and a sense of belonging we desperately needed. I truly expect big things from this place as they grow, and I’m grateful to have been part of the beginning. If you’re looking for a place that’s pure, supportive, and built on real love and intention — this is it. — ML You guys rock. Never stop working for the addict that still suffers. Please. We needed you guys so bad. Thank you. P.S. just in one week they took me on the best outing I’ve ever been to at Dave and Busters, and then took it a step further and visited the most beautiful garden in California in Encinitas. Don’t walk. Run. You’re safe here. I wrote and published both of these books while in treatment here. You can do it too!
